Payzone, together with the Post Office, has partnered with the Trussell Trust. The demand for food bank services has increased significantly in recent years and there are over 2,000 food banks in the UK. These provide emergency food parcels to people and families who are unable to pay for basics like food and essential household items.
People are usually referred to a food bank through an organisation like Citizens Advice, a GP, or a school that provides vouchers which can be exchanged for a food parcel. Food banks rely on donations of food and household items to provide families with emergency supplies.
As a retail network, Post Office and Payzone can support food banks throughout the UK by hosting donation collection points in their branch. This simple process shows commitment to your community and may even encourage people to shop with you because you are making it easier for them to donate to the local food bank.
In early 2023, Post Office generated £339,292.90 for The Trussell Trust across the network of UK Post Offices. Trussell Trust runs over 1,300 of the UK’s foodbanks and their online tool can help you find your local foodbank.
Contact your local foodbank and ask them if you can help by hosting a collection point in your branch (this works best if you sell food and household essentials or are near other shops which do). You can then talk to them about logistics like how will you arrange delivery or collection of the donations as some food banks may be able to collect from you, but others will need you to deliver donations to them.
It’s important to build a relationship with the food bank as there may be other things you can collaborate on or other ways you can support them. Remember, some of your customers will be food bank users too so it’s worth finding out more about your local food bank and how people access them.
Set up a collection point in your branch. This can be a box, a basket or a trolley that is well presented. It’s important that your collection point is somewhere obvious and clearly labelled with the poster below as it is a legal requirement for customers to see where donations are going.
Tell your customers so they can donate. Let customers know you’re supporting your food bank. It’s an issue lots of people engage with and will be keen to help so make sure everyone in your community can get involved.
How else could you help?
Could you match donations or offer donated goods at a discount? Showing your commitment to supporting The Trussell Trust can encourage your customers to get on board and sets you apart as a business that is supporting the community.
We are aware that many of you will have customers visiting your store who require assistance or food parcels themselves. The best way to help them is to direct them to Trussell Trust.
