How do I pay my British Gas bill?

Gas & Electricity top-ups

You can pay your British Gas bill by presenting your barcoded bill at a Payzone or Post Office store, via direct debit directly through British Gas or by making payments over the phone or online.

Prepayment Meter top up

To top up your prepayment meter with British Gas, take your gas card or electricity key to your nearest Payzone store or Post Office branch. All Post Office and Payzone stores accept cash payments while debit and credit card payments can be made at the discretion of the Payzone retailer.

Direct Debit

You can pay your British Gas energy bill by direct debit. You can pay in fixed monthly payments so the same amount is paid each month, or opt for variable monthly payments. Variable monthly payments are determined by the amount of energy that you use. 

Telephone Payments

To pay your British Gas energy bill over the phone, call the 24-hour automated payment line on 0333 202 9524. They accept all major MasterCards and Visa Cards. 

Online Payments

You can pay your British Gas energy bill online via the British Gas app, the British Gas website or your internet banking app. 

To pay your bill via the app, download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and follow the account setup instructions. You can make instant payments, submit meter readings, set up reminders and more.

To pay your bill via the British Gas website, access the account login area here. The secure, web-based payment service will take your online payment. 

To pay your bill via your internet banking app, make a bank transfer to British Gas using their Sort Code: 400530 and Account Number: 71584685 and quote your British Gas Customer Account Number. 

Postal Payments 

To pay your British Gas energy bill by post, make cheques, banker's drafts, building society cheques or postal orders payable to British Gas Services (IPSL).

How do I get a new British Gas (gas/electric) top up card?

If you need a replacement British Gas pay-as-you-go gas card, you can collect one from your nearest Payzone SuperAgent. Payzone SuperAgents are highlighted in blue on our Store Locator.   

If you need a replacement British Gas electricity key you need to contact the British Gas Pay as you go team by calling 0330 100 0303 or, message directly via Whatsapp. They will give you an RTI number which will be activated within 30 minutes. Then, visit your nearest Payzone SuperAgent, who will provide you with a new British Gas electricity key. 

If you have a smart meter and need a new replacement energy card you can order through your online account. Sign in and select 'Manage account' for the fuel that needs a replacement card. Then click on 'Order a new payment card' in the 'Your payments' section. Once you have confirmed your name and delivery address click 'Submit your details.' It'll take ten working days to get to you.

Where can I top up my British Gas prepayment meter?

How do I top up my British Gas gas meter?

You can top up your pay-as-you-go gas meter at any Payzone store or Post Office branch. To top up, simply hand your card or key to the shop attendant and pay for the required amount. You can top up any amount but £1 being the minimum payment. Once you have topped up your gas card put it into your meter and hold the ‘A’ button to transfer the credit from your card to your meter. 

How do I top up my British Gas electricity meter?

There are 3 different ways you can top up your British Gas electricity meter; over the counter, online or over the phone.

At a Payzone Store or Post Office Branch

For customers with a prepayment meter, you can top up your electricity meter over the counter at over 24,000 Payzone stores and Post Office branches. Take your British Gas electricity key to your nearest Payzone store or Post Office branch and top up over the counter with cash. You can top up any amount from £1 to £49 in a single transaction. Once you have topped up your British Gas electricity key put it into your meter. The credit will transfer to your meter automatically. This is the only way to top up your electricity if you have a prepayment meter.

Online

To top up your British Gas electricity meter online, log in to your British Gas online account and click the ‘Top Up Online’ tab. If you can’t remember your British Gas online account details, you can still complete your British Gas smart meter top up online as a guest using your Smart Card Number. 

Electricity top ups can be made via the British Gas app, which can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play.

Telephone

To top up your British Gas electricity meter over the phone, call 0300 100 0303. You will need your customer reference number and your debit or credit card details. 

How do I top up my British Gas meter without a card?

If you’re a customer with a British Gas prepayment meter, you can’t top up without a gas card or electricity key. 

If you have lost your gas card or need a replacement, you can collect one from your nearest Payzone SuperAgent. Payzone SuperAgents are highlighted in blue on our Store Locator. If you have lost your electricity key or need a replacement, contact the British Gas Pay as you go team by calling 0330 100 0303 and they can advise. 

If you’re a British Gas customer with a smart meter, you can top up without a card online, through the British Gas app or over the phone. 

Why is my British gas top up card not working?

If your British Gas top up card is not working, there could be a problem with either your meter or your card. First, wipe the gold chip on your card and try again. If your British Gas card still is not working, check your meter for error messages. If there are no error messages, you will need to replace your British Gas card with a new one.

You can get a replacement gas card from any Payzone store who is marked as a SuperAgent. A Payzone SuperAgent is marked in blue on the Store Locator. 

What can I do if I’ve lost my gas / electric key?

If you have lost your gas card, you can pick up a replacement at your nearest Payzone store marked as a SuperAgent. All Payzone SuperAgents are marked in blue on the Store Locator. 

If you have lost your electricity key contact our Pay as you go team. They will give you a reference number. After 30 minutes, you can pick up a replacement at your nearest Payzone store marked as a SuperAgent. 

Alternatively, British Gas can post you a new card or key within three working days.

How do I put emergency credit on my smart meter?

To put emergency credit on your smart meter, insert your key or card to release the emergency credit. The prepayment meter normally has £5 of emergency credit which will need to be paid back when you next top up your card.

What is the minimum amount you can put on a British Gas Card?

The minimum amount you can put on a British Gas energy card is £1, up to a maximum of £49 in a single transaction. Your electricity meter will hold up to £249 and gas meters hold a maximum of £999.

Who qualifies for British Gas Warm Home Discount?

There are two ways you can qualify for the Warm Home Discount scheme. 

If you are a pensioner who receives the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount. 

Or, if you are on a low-income and receive income support, income-related employment and support allowance (ESA) or income-based job seeker’s allowance you may also be eligible. However, your benefit must include one of the following:

  • Child element for children aged 5 or under
  • Disabled child element
  • A disability or pensioner premium

Why is British Gas stopping PayPoint?

British Gas customers were no longer able to top up at PayPoint stores from 31st December 2019. British Gas customers with prepayment meters can now top up over the counter at Payzone stores and Post Office branches. There are over 24,000 outlets across the UK.
