How to run an eco-friendly store

Business Growth

So, if you haven’t already heard, green retailing is the way to go for shopkeepers. You’re probably wondering how to make your store more eco-friendly, so here's why going green is the way forward.

First, you reduce your carbon footprint (sleep easier knowing you’re doing your bit for the environment). Second, you save money (that's more cash to spend on your next holiday). Finally, customers are happier to support an ethical business (that's more returning customers generating more cash for your store).

Right, are you in?

OK, all you need to do is follow these 8 easy steps to reduce your shop’s environmental impact.

1. Use eco-friendly cleaning products

Go through your cleaning cupboard and remove any supplies that contain toxic chemicals. Make the switch to natural products or even make your own. Simply mix water with distilled vinegar for a home-made, natural cleaning spray.

2. Make bags optional

Do your part in the global fight against plastic pollution and substitute your plastic bags for reusable or recycled bags. Ask every customer if they need a bag or receipt and advertise within your store the benefits of plastic-free and eco-friendly shopping.

3.Use LED lightbulbs

Some lightbulbs are better at conserving energy than others so it’s worth switching to ones that are more energy-efficient. With LED (light-emitting diode) or CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs, you’ll be saving money on utility bills as well as protecting the environment.

4. Opt for second-hand fixtures

Instead of splashing out on new shelving and units for your store, it’s better to salvage used and second-hand fixtures. Metal and plastics can be detrimental to the environment, so it’s better to opt for those made from natural materials.

 5. Sell organic produce

Obviously, it’s not realistic for you to sell only local and organic products, so why not introduce an ‘organic corner’. Perhaps you live in a seaside town famous for its fish or live near a farm that can supply fresh dairy products. This would increase the sustainability of local businesses as well as appealing to customers’ community values.

6. Don’t let food go to waste

If you notice your food produce starting to go out of date, why not donate it to a charity or homeless shelter instead of letting it go to waste. Or, find out if there is a service in your community that turns food into compost.

7. Store certain food in containers

Supplying packaging-free products is great for the environment. This could include storing nuts, spices and cereals in jars to encourage customers to bring their own form of packaging and reduce the impact of plastic.

8. Improve air quality

Placing several plants under air conditioning vents improves the general quality of air. A plant-based interior would make the store aesthetically pleasing and certain plants, such as peace lilies and snake plants, have the additional benefits of removing contaminants from the air.

With these 8 simple steps, going green has never been easier!

Promoting yourself as a retailer who is fighting against climate change will help you stand out from competitors. Many customers will actively search for environmentally friendly stores to purchase sustainable and organic products.

We hope that we’ve given you some confidence in getting started. It’s time to take the plunge and started making these small changes to increase footfall, lower utility bill costs and make a positive impact on the environment.
